Florida Week 2: Bikes, Brews, & Borrowed Rock Stars

If Week 1 at Splash RV Resort was about settling in, Week 2 was about leaning all the way in—to bikes, beer, music, Halloween chaos, and accidentally becoming part of the entertainment.

Bike Rides, Greenways & Ghostly Neighborhoods

We pedaled our way into downtown Milton and onto the Blackwater Heritage State Trail / Milton Greenway, which is one of those “hey, Florida, you’re showing off again” kind of paths—flat, shaded, and ridiculously bike-friendly. The trail winds through town, past neighborhoods, and straight into seasonal joy.

October meant one thing: Halloween decorations. And Milton did not disappoint. We cruised through neighborhood after neighborhood snapping photos of spooky porches, inflatable monsters, and homes that clearly take October very personally.

We also popped into the local Milton library… but no library card for us. Apparently, you have to be in one place longer than nomad-time to qualify. Fair enough.

Lucky for me, I still have full access to my Colorado libraries - Poudre River Library District and Front Range Library - which means my audio and e-book stash remains gloriously stocked no matter what state we’re in. Who needs a local card when you’ve got digital library magic in your pocket?

Just down the road, we stumbled upon the West Florida Railroad Museum—a cool little historical gem dedicated to the area’s rail history. Of course, it was closed (because that’s how discoveries work), but we’ve officially added it to the “next time” list.

Finally, success! We stopped at Beardless Brewhaus, a a local favorite known for small-batch craft beers and a laid-back, everyone’s-a-regular vibe. After wandering all day, nothing hits quite like a couple of flights. A delicious ending to a packed week.

Golf Carts, Ghosts & Music Melee

Friday night kicked off with the Halloween Golf Cart Parade, which was equal parts adorable and chaotic. Golf carts were decked out in full Halloween regalia, and riders tossed candy and little trinkets to bystanders like a low-speed Mardi Gras.

And even though Halloween is my absolute favorite holiday, we somehow managed to wear zero costumes anywhere this year. It just didn’t feel quite right without our people around. That said, Splash RV Resort more than made up for it—kids were trick-or-treating everywhere, families dressed up, and plenty of festive energy floating through the park.

The night wrapped with karaoke, where we met some wonderful new friends:

  • DeeDee & Jim

  • Janet & Don and their daughter April, who was celebrating her 43rd birthday and having an exceptionally enthusiastic amount of fun (there's a bit of an inside joke there).

Let’s just say… the karaoke crowd was warm, welcoming, and not remotely judgmental. Exactly what you want.

Saturday night featured live music from Smokey Jones & the Freeway 98 Band, a high-energy group known around the Florida Panhandle for blending Southern rock, classic rock staples, and crowd-pleasing favorites that keep people dancing (or at least toe-tapping in their camp chairs).

They brought big sound, strong vocals, and an easygoing stage presence that fit the Splash RV Resort vibe perfectly. It was the kind of set that worked whether you were actively listening, socializing with friends, or just enjoying the warm evening air with a drink in hand.

Live music nights like this have quickly become one of our favorite parts of Splash—low-pressure, high-fun, and a great way to bring the whole park together.

Proud Moments & Musical Bingo

Sunday came with a proud long-distance celebration. Cory’s girlfriend, Nikki, graduated from the State Trooper School in Colorado. We couldn’t be there in person, but we were incredibly happy for her—and proud doesn’t even begin to cover it.

That evening we joined in on Music Bingo, a regular Sunday event at Splash. Each player gets double bingo boards filled with song titles, and the caller plays 30-second clips. If you can’t place it, no worries—you’re allowed help from AI, Shazam, the internet, or literally the person sitting next to you.

We didn’t win anything, but I did walk away with a whole list of new karaoke song ideas. So really… who’s the winner here?

Week 2 at Splash RV Resort reminded us why we love this lifestyle: bikes instead of schedules, new friends instead of routines, and just enough chaos to keep things interesting.

Cheers!

Hi, thanks for stopping by!

Chasing78Life is a blog that was created to document our journey of living full-time in an RV and the adventures that come with it while chasing 78 degrees. We are a couple of empty nesters who decided to retire early and hit the road. We are new to the RV life and don’t have a ton of experience, but we are passionate about life and travel.

Through this blog, we want to share our experiences, tips and tricks as we travel around the US. We hope to inspire others to pursue their dreams and make the most of life.
