Week 2 at Wekiva Falls: Headaches, Heroic Heights & Huzzah for the New Year

If Week 1 at Wekiva Falls was our warm-up act, Week 2 felt like the full variety show — complete with drama, adventure, medieval costumes, and a shocking amount of hamburger soup.

The Headache That Tried to Cancel My Social Life

The week kicked off with one of those headaches that makes you question every life decision that led you to that moment. Still, we refused to surrender completely, so we hopped on the bikes for a short 10-mile loop around Wekiva Falls Resort.

But the pain won the evening battle. We skipped Saturday Night Karaoke (I know… tragic) and instead curled up to finish Season 2 of Ted Lasso.

Honestly, if you’re going to be miserable, Ted Lasso is excellent emotional support.

Headache-Free and Back in the Saddle

Sunday morning arrived like a miracle — no headache!

We celebrated the only way we know how: with a very casual 20+ mile bike ride.

We cruised along the scenic Wekiva Trail, connected to the Neighborhood Lakes Scenic Trail, and meandered through quiet neighborhoods that felt like Florida’s secret backyard.

It was the kind of ride where you forget how far you’ve gone until your legs politely remind you later.

Daytona Detour Day

Monday, we hit the road for a little adventure to Daytona Beach.

Our original plan was to visit the pier (rumor has it it’s the longest in Florida), but the parking situation was… let’s say “competitive.” After circling like vultures, we pivoted to the far more practical plan: lunch. We were able to use some gift cards for Cracker Barrel. Nothing beats an almost free lunch!

Then came the real highlight — a self-guided climb at the historic Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse & Museum.

This beauty is one of the tallest lighthouses in the U.S., and yes, that means a lot of stairs.

Darren faced his fear of heights head-on and conquered that lighthouse like a champ. The views from the top? Totally worth every step and every wobble.

Renaissance Prep: The 10-Hour Decorating Marathon

The day before New Year’s Eve, we joined Kristie and Arlea to transform the Magnolia Clubhouse into a Renaissance wonderland.

Ten. Hours.

Darren became Ladder King, climbing up and down all day to hang drapery like a medieval stagehand. By the end, we were exhausted but proud — the place looked fantastic.

Huzzah! A Renaissance New Year’s Eve

The next night, we donned our finest Renaissance Faire costumes and arrived early for last-minute tweaks.

We were honored with seats at the “cool kids” table (I assume our status is now official).

Kristie cooked two gigantic pots of hamburger soup — one spicy, one mild — to keep things “authentic.” We went spicy and had zero regrets.

There was dancing, laughter, and yes… some enthusiastic twerking. Tara, IYKYK.

We rang in the new year with a champagne toast and made it home shortly after midnight, feeling festive and victorious.

January 1: The Humbling

Apparently, my body disagreed with my belief that I “didn’t drink that much.”New Year’s Day was spent in bed, watching movies, and rethinking my life choices.

Still, it was cozy — and honestly, a perfect excuse to do absolutely nothing.

Burgers, Water Jugs & Card Sharks

The next day, we celebrated the new year properly with Dan and Stacey.

Darren biked over while I chauffeured our empty water bottles for refills. Stacey lent us her countertop drink dispenser, which has since revolutionized our hydration logistics.

Then came lunch at Steak 'n Shake.

It was our first visit, and after a burger-and-fries craving fueled by the previous day’s starvation diet, I’m officially a fan.

We wrapped up the evening playing cards late into the night… and yes, we missed karaoke again. A tragic theme of the week.

The Karaoke That Never Was

We returned to town the next day to retrieve Darren’s bike from Dan and Stacey’s and grab groceries, fully determined to reclaim our karaoke destiny that Saturday.

But alas… the KJ was sick.

No music. No singing. No dramatic key changes.

So naturally, we went home and watched more Ted Lasso. Again, a solid backup plan.

Week 2 Verdict

This week delivered headaches, heroic climbs, medieval costumes, surprise hangovers, and newfound burger loyalty.

Honestly? Exactly the kind of unpredictable fun we signed up for when we chose life on the road.

Cheers!
