Trails, A Tank Full of Fun & a Spoonful of Comfort — Our First Week at Wekiva Falls Resort

We made it to Wekiva Falls Resort in "beautiful" Sorrento, Florida, earlier than check-in — and guess what? Our site was already open! Score. Kind of felt like we were VIPs… or maybe just ridiculously lucky. But the universe wasn’t done spoiling us — there was an early Christmas gift waiting in the mail room: “Spoonful of Comfort” from my dad & step-mom. (Seriously, thanks — that cozy goodness was yum).

So we didn’t waste a minute. We stashed the goodies, set up just the basics at the campsite, and hit the pavement on our bikes for a quick 12-mile loop around the area — sun shining, tunes blaring, wind in the hair… you get the idea. We rolled back just in time for the Wekiva Falls Christmas golf-cart parade. I’m telling you — nothing says “holiday spirit” like a fleet of golf carts decked out in tinsel, lights, and questionable sound systems.

That night? Pajama-themed Karaoke. And — plot twist — we got invited to the Wekiva Falls New Year’s Eve Celebration taking place next week… renaissance themed. Yep. I immediately started mentally piecing our costumes together.

Mt. Dora Adventures, Beer with Paul & a Storybook Evening

The next day, we took the truck for a road trip over to Mt. Dora, FL — a charming little downtown that feels like it belongs in a Hallmark movie (especially at Christmas). We met up with our beer buddy and fellow nomad, Paul — expert van-lifer and professional good-times haver.

We wandered the brick-lined streets doing some top-tier window shopping and soaking in all the small-town holiday charm before landing at Wolf Branch Brewing for a flight and a round of well-earned cold ones. From there, the three of us headed to Frog & Monkey Pub for a seriously delicious dinner — cozy atmosphere, great food, and exactly the kind of place you linger a little too long.

But we weren’t done yet.

After dinner, we all took a stroll over to the historic Lakeside Inn, where they were displaying the results of their guest-built mini Christmas tree decorating competition. Let me tell you — creativity was alive and well. Some trees were elegant, some were hilarious, and a few looked like glitter had absolutely exploded… which honestly made them even better.

From there, we wandered down toward the water and were treated to a gorgeous sunset over Lake Dora. The sky was showing off in full Florida fashion — soft pinks, oranges, and that glassy water reflecting it all like a postcard.

After saying goodbye to Paul, Darren, and I drove through downtown and nearby neighborhoods, admiring all the Christmas lights twinkling through the trees. The only thing missing? Spiked hot chocolate in a travel mug. Rookie mistake — we’ll be better prepared next time.

Long Ride, Sanford Stops & Brussels Sprouts

The Florida weather was too gorgeous not to use, so we loaded up for a 40+ mile bike ride along the Wekiva / Seminole Trail — all the way into Sanford, FL. The trail? Absolute bliss. It’s smooth, shaded in spots, and lined with palms and pines. You could spend weeks exploring and still want more.

Mid-ride, we made a pilgrimage to Brewlando in Sanford (y’all, craft beer mid-trail is a vibe), enjoyed a flight, and shared a surprisingly excellent Brussels sprouts appetizer — because grown-ups can eat their vegetables when there’s beer involved.

Christmas Eve: Ham, Movies & Cozy Vibes

Christmas Eve was low-key but perfect. We whipped up our own special ham dinner with all the fixings, lounged around, pigged out (no regrets), and watched movies like the holiday couch potatoes we are.

Christmas Dinner with Friends — So Much Gratitude

If you’ve been following our journey way back to last February, then you remember our awesome friends Dan & Stacey from Fort Collins — and yes, we’re still pals! They invited us over for Christmas dinner with their family, including their son Collin (same age as Logan), Collin’s wife Rachele, and kids Casey & Annin. Also on the guest list: Dan’s mom, Maureen, and step-dad, Gary. Such warm hearts, full bellies, and laughs — seriously grateful for them.

On the drive home from dinner, we once again admired more Christmas lights — and I swear, Florida just glows this time of year.

Lake Mary Quick Trip & Chicken Salad Chick

Late in the week, we squeezed in another mini-adventure: a 12-mile bike ride into Lake Mary to get Darren adjusted at The Joint Chiropractic (pro tip: getting properly aligned after long rides is life-changing). Then we rewarded ourselves with some Chicken Salad Chick containers — unstoppable bike fuel for the 12-ish mile ride home.

One thing we’ve discovered this week? The bike trails around here are amazing. Like, seriously — if there’s a rail or greenway nearby, we’re probably going to ride it.

All in all? Our first week at Wekiva Falls Resort has been one for the books — community parades, trail miles, tasty brews, and Christmas magic with friends old and new.

Cheers!
