Who would've thought we'd need snow boots in Florida? Certainly not us! Our second week at Splash RV Resort in Milton turned into a winter escapade we'll never forget.
Surprise Snowfall: When Florida Froze Over
It all started with whispers of a cold front, but we shrugged them off—after all, it's Florida! Then, Mother Nature decided to have a laugh. We woke up to a staggering 8.8 inches of snow, shattering the previous state record of 4 inches set in 1954. (weartv.com)
Milton made national headlines with this unprecedented snowfall. The town was blanketed in white, and locals were just as astonished as we were. Businesses shuttered their doors, highways became impassable, and the community came to a standstill. Interstate 10 was closed from the Alabama border to Tallahassee, leaving many unable to reach their destinations. (pnj.com)
Snowball Fights and Frosty Friends
With roads closed and nowhere to go, we embraced the snow day like kids on a school cancellation. Snowball fights erupted between RVs, and someone even built a snowman—complete with a sunhat and sunglasses, because, Florida.
Arctic Nights: 5° in the Sunshine State?
As night fell, so did the temperatures. We experienced bone-chilling lows of 5°F, a rarity in these parts. Our bodies weren't exactly ready for such frigid conditions, but with our electric fireplace, propane furnace, and layers of blankets, we turned our tiny home into a cozy fortress.

Cabin Fever? Not at Splash!
Being snowed in had its perks. The resort's community center became our social hub. Karaoke nights on Fridays were a hit, with fellow RVers belting out classics (some better than others, but who's judging?). Saturdays featured live music, and mid-week, we sharpened our minds with Bingo, Trivia, and Darren even tried his hand at Bunko. The camaraderie was heartwarming, making the cold snap more bearable.

Thawing Out and Tasty Discoveries
After a few days, the sun remembered its Floridian duties, and the snow began to melt. With roads clearing, we ventured into town and stumbled upon a local gem: McKinely's Sandwich Shop. Tucked away on Stewart Street without a flashy sign, it was the epitome of a hidden treasure. The aroma of fresh bread lured us in, and the sandwiches? Divine. We shared the Pastrami Panini - thinly-sliced Boar's Head pastrami with course brown mustard, mayo, dill pickle, and Swiss cheese plus the Turkey Pesto Panini - smoked turkey, roasted red peppers, and provolone cheese with their pesto mayo. Throw in a couple of bags of Zapp's Voo-Doo chips and a couple of soda's and we were in sandwich heaven!
The locals were friendly, sharing stories of past winters (none as wild as this one) and recommending their favorite menu items. It felt good to support a small business after the weather-induced hiatus.
Reflecting on Our Frosty Adventure
While we hadn't planned for a winter wonderland in Milton, the experience brought our RV community closer and gave us stories to last a lifetime. From impromptu snowball fights to discovering local eateries, we turned a frosty curveball into a memorable adventure.
Until the next unexpected escapade,
Cheers!
