Savannah Shenanigans: Showers, Shutoffs & Seriously Good Sandwiches

If there were a theme for our stay at Savannah Lakes RV Resort, it would be: “Expectation vs. Reality…with a side of great beer and even better friends.”

Arrival: Storm Clouds & High Hopes

We rolled into Savannah just as the sky decided to go full drama queen—dark clouds, wind, the whole cinematic welcome. Savannah Lakes looked shiny and new, with baby trees trying their best to grow up fast and sleek black-and-white buildings that screamed “modern farmhouse chic.”

Honestly? We were excited. This place had:

  • Actual working gates (luxury!)

  • A gorgeous clubhouse

  • Private shower rooms (yes please!)

But then came the plot twists:

  • Heated pool? Closed

  • Hot tub? Also closed

  • Karaoke Friday night? Apparently…aspirational

So instead of belting out tunes, I lived my best RV life and knocked out a couple loads of laundry. Not exactly Nashville, but hey—clean socks are underrated.

Saturday: Water Woes & Music Wins

The next morning started with a bang…or more accurately, a drip…then nothing. Our water shut off mid-morning thanks to a mysterious “water emergency” affecting only our section. (Sure, Sharon.)

We shrugged it off and met up with our transplanted Fort Collins crew—Claudia and Chandler—for a proper Savannah day: beer, music, and bouncing around town.

First stop: the gorgeous Bohemian Hotel Savannah Riverfront along the river, where we caught Justin Vreeland playing at Coastal 15. He’s got that laid-back Americana vibe that just fits Savannah like Spanish moss on an oak tree.

Next up: Over Yonder / Moodrights—a dive bar combo packed tighter than a festival shuttle. We came for Jackson & the Jenks…but stayed for burgers and beers instead. No regrets.

We wrapped the night at Back River Brewery on Tybee Island, catching Rhyan and Toni—familiar faces from last year. Add a flight of beers and good company, and we were officially back in our happy place.

Sunday: Wind, Pizza & Flying Menus

Morning déjà vu: water off again. Because…of course it was.

But it came back before we headed out, so off we went for round two with the crew.

Lunch was at Vinnie Van GoGo’s, where I scored a $6 slice of pepperoni and black olive pizza roughly the size of a toddler. Absolute steal.

Then back to The Wexford Pub to catch Justin again—this time outdoors, center stage, and battling wind gusts strong enough to qualify as a CrossFit workout.

Menus? Flying.

Drinks? Threatened.

Us? Determined.

Next stop: Service Brewing Company for excellent beer and a killer set by Eric Culberson. We also met more of the extended friend crew—basically, by this point, Savannah had adopted us.

Monday: Sandwich Goals on Hilton Head

Darren and I took a 30-mile escape to Hilton Head Island, chasing one thing: sandwiches.

Enter The Earl of Sandwich Pub.

Darren had The Duke, I went all-in on a corned beef masterpiece, and let me tell you—this place lived up to the hype. We followed it up with a stroll through a nearby park leading to the beach, imagining how packed it must get when it’s not “wind advisory chic.”

Tuesday: Charleston Charm & Legendary Hush Puppies

Extended road trip time! Two hours to Charleston for lunch at the iconic Hyman’s Seafood.

They had us at free hush puppies while waiting. Possibly the best we’ve ever had. Ever.

Inside, we were seated at a table once occupied by Lynyrd Skynyrd—so obviously, we felt very important.

  • Carolina Delight appetizer (accidentally free, no complaints)

  • Fish & chips for Darren

  • Shrimp & grits with bacon and cheese for me

We wandered over to Charleston City Market and stumbled across a hauntingly beautiful historic cemetery—complete with what might be the oldest tree in the city.

Wednesday: Brazilian Bites & Brewery Chic

Group lunch adventure to Poole, GA at Ember Lotus—a Brazilian-style feast with endless meats and a buffet that tested my limits.

Was it pricey? Yes.

Did I regret it? Not even a little.

We followed that up with beers at Hop Atomica—super swanky, solid brews, cool vibe.

Thursday: Seafood, Sunsets & The Legendary Kro-Bar

Chandler and Claudia drove us to dinner at Bubba Gumbo’s right on the water = seafood + sunset perfection.

Then a nighttime stop at the Tybee Island Light Station and Museum for beach views that felt straight out of a movie.

BUT…the real main character moment?

The Kro-Bar—yes, a bar inside a Kroger—on its final night ever. Locals packed in, saying goodbye like it was a beloved dive bar. Honestly? Iconic.

We closed the night at Two Tides Brewing Company (eclectic, historic, fantastic beer) and karaoke at Bay Street Blues—finally getting the karaoke night we were promised…just not where we expected it.

Weekend Vibes: Art, Music & Firecrackers

The four of us hit the Gordonston Art Fair—a charming neighborhood event where I snagged an adorable coastal plant hanger (starfish + seahorses = instant yes).

Live music included a hardworking trio, then a standout set from Rhyan and Toni—easily the best we’ve heard from them.

We wrapped with a visit to Claudia & Chandler’s neighbor Connie…who remains an absolute firecracker and national treasure.

Sunday Send-Off: Soup, Strolls, & One Last Spin

We wrapped up our Savannah adventure the best way possible—with good food, good company, and a little fresh air to soak it all in.

Claudia and Chandler had us over for some homemade chicken and dumpling soup that absolutely hit the comfort food jackpot. Afterward, we took a peaceful stroll through Bonaventure Cemetery, wandering beneath those iconic moss-draped oaks and taking in the quiet, haunting beauty one last time.

But we weren’t quite ready to call it yet.

Before heading back to Savannah Lakes, we hopped on our bikes for one final ride along the Truman Linear Park Trail. It was the perfect send-off—flat, scenic, and just enough movement to feel like we were squeezing every last drop out of Savannah before rolling on. Cool air, easy pedaling, and that bittersweet “time to go, but not quite ready” feeling.

The next morning, we packed up (with fully functioning water—miracles do happen) and hit the road, already reminiscing about the music, the meals, and the memories we made here.

This time around, Savannah gave us spotty water, broken promises (RIP karaoke night that never was), incredible music, fantastic food, and an unforgettable time with friends.

Honestly? We’d take that trade every time.

Cheers!
