Coos Bay via Yampa & Mt. Shasta

July 2024: As the day started, the anticipation of embarking on an unforgettable journey filled the air. Our mission? To visit a couple of dear friends nestled in two separate breathtaking mountainous regions. Then on to the Northwest coast to perform at a wedding in Coos Bay, Oregon. Join me on this voyage woven with laughter, music, and the untamed beauty of nature!

Yampa, CO: A Rocky Mountain Reunion

The road stretched out before us, leading towards the towering peaks of the Rockies where our friend, Dan, awaited. Our Ford F350, named Betty, and our Brinkley 5th wheel, named Al, cruised through winding roads adorned with lush forests and snow-capped summits. The allure of reuniting with an old friend, amplified the thrill of the journey, making each mile marker feel like a step closer to home away from home.

Upon reaching our friend's abode in the Rockies, we set up camp in his front yard and enjoyed some much deserved firepit time in the backyard. After a few days of scenic drives, wildflower hikes, and beer discussions, we left Al behind and embarked on a road trip towards the enchanting Mt. Shasta to visit another dear friend.

Mt. Shasta, CA: From Ireland to California

Our friend Tara just made her grand return to the States after a six-year escapade in Ireland, landing in the sleepy area of Mt. Shasta. So, of course, on our way to the wedding, we had to swing by for a visit! Cue scenic hikes, deep talks, and hours of laughter (with a few happy tears thrown in for good measure). Sadly, the visit flew by way too fast because we had to hit the road again for the weekend wedding in the hills of the Oregon coast. Apparently, our tour of beautiful places wasn’t over just yet!

The Oregon Coast: Harmonies by the Sea

As we rolled into the charming town of Coos Bay, the ocean’s salty breeze practically gave us a high-five. This wasn’t just any wedding spot—it was the perfect backdrop for the band to do what we love most: rock out! We checked in early enough to soak in some downtime, explore the area, and, of course, enjoy some epic hangouts with the band crew.

On the evening of the wedding the air was tinged with excitement as we serenaded the newlyweds with heartfelt melodies. The music and libations flowed as the night progressed. So much so, that the groom and his Coast Guard buddies were clearly having a blast. At some point, the party got so wild the “coasties” ditched their shirts, rocking just their pants, bow ties, and suspenders. Naturally, this sparked a full-blown conga line, which I may or may not have orchestrated (you’re welcome). With the band cranking out some rowdy, foot-stomping tunes, it didn’t take long for the entire wedding party to join in, dancing and laughing their way around the room like pros. It was the kind of chaos that makes a night unforgettable!

Back to Yampa: On the Road Again

Our long trek back to Colorado kicked off bright and early the next morning. After a round of goodbyes, Darren and I loaded up the truck and hit the road as the sag wagon to the band trailer. One overnight pit stop (and a final farewell to Drake and the trusty trailer), we finally rolled back into Yampa—bleary-eyed but very ready to trade the open road for some serious rest and relaxation. Dan was ever the gracious host, allowing us to stay on his property for a few more nights before we set sail back to Fort Collins.

Epilogue: A Journey's End

Back to reality as we packed up the rig and headed back to our spot at the Lake House. There’s nothing quite like the mix of exhaustion and exhilaration that comes with a road trip, especially when it’s spent with good friends. By the end, you’re running on fumes, but the laughs, deep talks, and shared adventures make it all worth it. Of course, there’s that moment when you pull back into the driveway, reluctant to return to the daily grind. But then it hits you—normal life is just short-term right now, so maybe the adventure isn’t really over. It’s just...paused.
